Does myo-inositol help treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder symptoms?

Yes, myo-inositol significantly improved PMDD symptoms on three rating scales. Powder and capsule formulations worked similarly, though the study did not report how many women were treated.

Early or limited evidence Women with PMDD (sample size not reported in abstract)

What they did

Two-phase randomized trial with a placebo washout period followed by treatment comparison. Women with PMDD received either myo-inositol as powder or soft gel capsules, or placebo. The number of participants was not reported in the abstract.

What they found

Significant improvements were seen on the Daily Symptoms Records scale, Hamilton Depression Rating scale, and Clinical Global Impression-Severity scale. Both powder formulation (2 grams) and soft gel capsule formulation (0.6 grams) produced similar improvement.

What it means for you

Myo-inositol appears effective for PMDD, with two formulations available. However, the study lacks key information: how many women were treated, how long treatment lasted, and whether results persisted after treatment ended. This limits confidence in the findings.
