Does indoprofen help premenstrual migraine?

In this very small study, indoprofen appeared to reduce pain levels and decrease a prostaglandin marker in fluid from around the brain.

Early or limited evidence 3 women with premenstrual migraine

What they did

They gave 3 women with premenstrual migraine an intravenous dose of indoprofen 400 mg. They measured levels of a prostaglandin (PGF2 alpha) in cerebrospinal fluid (the fluid around the brain and spinal cord) at 0, 15, 30, and 45 minutes after injection. They also measured pain using a visual pain scale.

What they found

The treatment decreased levels of PGF2 alpha in the cerebrospinal fluid and decreased pain levels on the visual pain scale.

What it means for you

Indoprofen may help premenstrual migraine by reducing prostaglandins. However, this was only 3 women with no comparison group, so much larger studies are needed to know if this treatment really works.
