Survey study, 2017
Does lavender aromatherapy reduce anxiety during PMS?
Yes. Teenage girls who received lavender aromatherapy showed much lower anxiety levels after treatment compared to before, although without a control group we cannot be completely certain that the lavender caused the improvement.
What they did
18 teenage girls aged 13-14 in Indonesia who were experiencing anxiety during PMS received lavender aromatherapy treatment. Their anxiety levels were measured before and after the treatment using a standard anxiety measurement scale.
What they found
Anxiety scores dropped from 27.61 before treatment to 8.17 after lavender aromatherapy treatment.
What it means for you
Lavender aromatherapy may help reduce PMS-related anxiety in teenage girls. However, because this study had no control group of girls who did not receive lavender, we cannot be sure that the lavender caused the improvement rather than other factors like attention or time passing. Larger studies with comparison groups are needed.
