Survey study, 2020

How common are PMS and PMDD in women?

In this study, all 198 women had some premenstrual symptoms, and 3.6% met criteria for PMDD, the more severe form.

Moderate study design 198 women aged 15-49 in a family practice center in Izmir, Turkey. 68% were single and 60% were housewives.

What they did

A cross-sectional study at a family practice center. A total of 198 women aged 15-49 filled out a premenstrual assessment form and answered questions about themselves.

What they found

All 198 women reported premenstrual symptoms. Of these, 3.6% were assessed as having PMDD. None of the personal details measured (age, marital status, job, weight measurements) predicted who would have PMDD. There was no link between these personal details and PMS in general, except for a weak link with waist circumference.

What it means for you

PMS is very common in women, but PMDD affects only a small percentage. Personal and social details might not determine who has PMS or PMDD. Results come from one family practice center in Turkey, so they might differ in other places or populations.
