How common is premenstrual tension in adolescent girls?
Most adolescent girls experience mild to moderate premenstrual tension syndrome. Family background like mother's education and father's job appear to be related to symptom levels.
What they did
200 adolescent girls attending degree colleges in Bagalkot were surveyed using a premenstrual tension syndrome scale.
What they found
64.5% of girls had mild premenstrual tension, 35% had moderate, and 0.5% had severe. Age was related to premenstrual tension levels. Mother's education level was related to premenstrual tension levels. Father's occupation was related to premenstrual tension levels.
What it means for you
Premenstrual tension is very common in adolescent girls. Family background characteristics like parental education and occupation appear related to symptom levels, though this study only shows connection, not cause. The study was from one region only, so results may differ elsewhere.
