Cohort study, 1991

Does tubal sterilization cause premenstrual syndrome?

No. A study of 78 women with PMS found no difference in symptom severity or hormone levels between those who had tubal sterilization and those who didn't, suggesting PMS is probably not caused by the procedure.

Moderate study design 78 women with confirmed premenstrual syndrome (some who had tubal sterilization, some who hadn't)

What they did

They compared 78 women with confirmed PMS - some who had tubal sterilization and some who hadn't. They evaluated symptom severity and hormone levels both by asking women about the past and by tracking them over time.

What they found

No significant difference in symptom severity or hormone levels between women who had tubal sterilization and those who didn't, whether looking at past recollections or prospective tracking.

What it means for you

Women shouldn't worry that getting their tubes tied will cause or worsen PMS. However, this is an older study from 1991 of women who already had PMS, so results might be different for other groups.
