Does martial arts exercise reduce PMS?

Yes. Female students who did more pencak silat exercise had lower PMS symptoms, but this is based on students who already do martial arts, so we cannot be certain it causes the improvement.

Early or limited evidence 30 female students in a martial arts club at a university in Indonesia

What they did

Researchers measured 30 female students in a martial arts club about how much pencak silat exercise they did and assessed their PMS symptoms using a questionnaire.

What they found

56.7% of the students did a sufficient amount of pencak silat exercise. 56.7% of students did not have mild PMS symptoms. There was a clear relationship between how much exercise they did and their PMS symptoms.

What it means for you

Doing martial arts exercise may help reduce PMS symptoms. However, this was a very small group of students who already chose to do martial arts, so we do not know if it works for women who do not train or if it works for other types of exercise. The study does not tell us how much exercise is needed or which women benefit most.
