Non-randomised trial, 2022

Does a young women's class reduce PMS anxiety in teenage girls?

Yes. Teenage girls who attended a young women's class with stress management and yoga exercises showed a mean anxiety reduction of 5.94 compared to 0.97 in the control group.

Early or limited evidence Female adolescents with PMS

What they did

Female adolescents with PMS received either a Young Women's Class (including stress management, hygiene guidelines, and yoga exercises) once per month, or no intervention. Anxiety was measured at baseline and 4 weeks later using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale.

What they found

The intervention group's mean anxiety reduction was 5.94 compared to 0.97 in the control group (p=0.000). Adolescents who did not attend the class had 5.88 higher anxiety levels. Girls with menstrual periods longer than 7 days had 0.76 higher anxiety.

What it means for you

Young women's classes with stress management and yoga may reduce PMS anxiety. However, this was not a randomized controlled trial, so we cannot be certain the class itself caused the anxiety reduction rather than other factors.
