Early or limited evidence Women with PMS and PMDD (5-8 percent with severe PMDD)

What they did

Historical review of patent filings from 1963 onward for treatments of premenstrual syndrome and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

What they found

Approximately 5-8 percent of women report premenstrual symptoms severe enough to impair daily function and suffer from PMDD, with many more reporting milder PMS symptoms. Hundreds of patented treatments include hormone-based therapies, serotonergic drugs (antidepressants), vitamins and minerals, dietary supplements, compounds with GABAergic activity, and gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonists.
