Case report, 2018
Can mood and psychotic symptoms happen before the period in women with PCOS?
Yes. One young woman with PCOS experienced three episodes of mixed mood and psychotic symptoms before her period. This is very rare.
What they did
Described one case of a young woman with polycystic ovarian syndrome, a condition that affects hormone levels, who had mood and psychotic episodes linked to her menstrual cycle.
What they found
She experienced three episodes. Each involved mixed mood symptoms (depression and mania together) plus psychotic symptoms (hearing or seeing things that are not real) that appeared before her period.
What it means for you
Women with PCOS can occasionally have severe premenstrual mood and psychotic symptoms. This is very rare. Only one case is reported, so we do not know how common it is or what treatments work.
