Does myo-inositol help reduce PMDD symptoms?
No, myo-inositol (12 g daily) did not reduce PMDD symptoms more than placebo.
What they did
Eleven women with PMDD took either myo-inositol (12 g daily) or glucose placebo during the luteal phase only, 14 days before menses. The study was a crossover, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial lasting 6 menstrual cycles, with treatment alternating each cycle.
What they found
No beneficial effect was demonstrated for inositol over placebo.
What it means for you
Although myo-inositol has helped with depression, panic, and other conditions in previous research, it does not appear to help PMDD. The sample was small (11 women), so results should be confirmed in larger studies.
