Survey study, 1983

What conditions are commonly found together with PMS?

Endometriosis was most common (found in 66 women), followed by dysmenorrhea (31). Women also showed hormone changes, with lower progesterone and higher estrogen in the second half of the cycle.

Early or limited evidence 137 premenopausal women with PMS

What they did

137 premenopausal women with PMS underwent laparoscopy, a procedure to examine their reproductive organs, because they had bleeding, pain, and/or infertility problems.

What they found

Endometriosis was found in 66 women (the most common finding), dysmenorrhea in 31, poststerilization syndrome in 24, chronic pelvic inflammatory disease in 8, and fibroids in 8. Some women with unusual nipple discharge were found to have a pituitary tumor (1) or thyroid disease (2). Women had lower progesterone levels and higher estradiol (a form of estrogen) during the middle of the luteal phase.

What it means for you

PMS often occurs with other gynecologic problems, especially endometriosis. This suggests that underlying issues in the reproductive system or hormones may contribute to PMS. The study was small and included no control group for comparison.
